In March, START convened a science leadership training course for the African Academy of Sciences’ FLAIR and the Climate Research for Development (CR4D) fellowship programs. Approximately, 30 FLAIR fellows and 20 CR4D fellows completed the course, which explored issues of personality types and leadership styles, strategic influencing, gender and power dynamics, emotional intelligence, adaptive management and effective communications among the topics. The course also examined challenges of working with high uncertainty associated with the Covid pandemic. The course was team taught by Monica Kapiriri and Maria Nassuna-Musoke from Uganda, Katharine Vincent from South Africa, and Mzime Murisa, a START Program Specialist based in Zimbabwe.
