The São Paulo School of Advanced Science on Ocean Interdisciplinary Research and Governance (SPSAS Ocean) will be held from 13 to 25 August 2018 at the University of São Paulo (USP), São Paulo, Brazil.
Goal
To provide graduate students with advanced knowledge on interdisciplinary ocean research and integrated science and governance, including issues related to public policy. Participants will discuss relevant themes with renowned scientists in a multidisciplinary and multicultural context.
Program
The course is organized around 3 major themes on ocean research:
1) Setting the context: theoretical and historical background;
2) Sharing the advances in oceans sciences: processes and connections;
3) Integrating science and public policies.
The 2-week course will include theoretical classes, work in groups, poster sessions, science-policy discussions, and a field trip to Baixada Santista, located in the central coast of the state of São Paulo.
Who can apply?
This School is for graduate students, currently registered in Masters/MSc or Doctoral/PhD courses. We encourage applications from students from different academic disciplines (natural, social and human sciences, engineering, communication) provided their academic work and study is related to the themes of the school and related topics.
Approximately 100 applicants, 50 from Brazil and 50 from other countries will be selected to participate in the Advanced School. Participants will be selected based on the merit of their application information, the relevance of the academic work and studies to the themes of the school. Field of study, gender and geographic representation and balance will also be considered. Applicants should receive notification from the organizing committee no later than 15 April 2018.
The SPSAS Ocean will be conducted in English. Applicants must be proficient or have a sound understanding of the English language in order to understand, communicate, and participate actively in the School activities.
Financial support
A limited number of travel grants is available for eligible participants who are selected to attend the School. If you need financial support, please indicate such need in the application form when required. If you are able to cover your travel costs, please let us know in the application form.
Financial support will be given based on the need of the applicant and merit of the application. Additional considerations will include geographic representation and gender balance. Priority may be given to applicants from less developed and emerging countries and countries at risk.
Certificate
Participants will receive a certificate from the Graduate Program in Oceanography of the Oceanographic Institute of the University of São Paulo (IO-USP) acknowledging their participation in the School, provided they attend all sessions of the program.
