About DOIs
The Digital Object Identifier (DOI®) is a system for identifying and exchanging intellectual property in the digital environment. The DOI is made up of two components. The first element, the prefix, is assigned to an appropriate grouping of content such as the publisher, label, or imprint by a Registration Agency. All prefixes begin with 10, followed by a number designating the content producer. The AGU prefix is 10.1029/. The second element is the suffix. This is the designation assigned by the content producer to the specific entity being identified. For AGU journal articles, the Paper Number is used as the suffix.
An AGU Paper Number consists of the 2-digit year (before 1999) or 4-digit year (1999 forward), followed by two uppercase letters that indicate the AGU journal, followed by a five- or six-digit sequential article number.
