Brochure, December 2009

START (the global change SysTem for Analysis, Research, and Training) promotes place-based and research-driven capacity building aimed at generating and disseminating knowledge on global environmental change and informing societal decisions in support of sustainable development.

START’s actions to build scientific capacity have greatly enhanced the contribution and visibility of developing country scientists in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the Millennium Ecosystem Assessments, and the UNFCCC’s Nairobi Work Programme on Impacts, Vulnerability, and Adaptation. Capacity building of national scientists by START-supported research and assessment programs has also increased the ability of these scientists to contribute to National Adaptation Programmes of Action and National Communications to the UNFCCC.

START is sponsored by the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme, the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change, and the World Climate Research Programme, and is part of the Earth System Science Partnership of the International Council for Science.
