AGU President’s Welcome Statement
Welcome to AGU! If you are a new visitor and want to know what our organization is all about, I invite you to tour our web site. Click on "about AGU" to read our Mission statement and values. Also, feel free to click on the publications, meetings and outreach tabs to see what we are doing in these areas.
We are an international Union of scientists, working together on a broad spectrum of scientific topics that span all of the Earth and space sciences. Our research encompasses everything from the exploration of the planets, to studies of the structure and chemical composition of the Earth's deep interior, to understanding the Earth's atmosphere and the causes of climate change. These are not only exciting scientific topics but many of the problems that we are working on are of great interest and relevance to humankind.
Our Union is a strong, healthy organization with more than 50,000 members, of whom ~ 36 % are from more than 130 countries outside of the United States. About 20 % of our members are students.
If you are a member, allow me to extend my personal welcome and express my interest in working with you to keep our organization strong. We are striving to maintain the highest standards of excellence in our meetings, publications, and outreach programs, and to help AGU evolve to meet the changing needs of our members. One of the things that we do best at AGU is interdisciplinary science. We have been very successful in building bridges between traditionally defined scientific disciplines. In fact, a great deal of the excitement of our science happens when AGU members from different disciplines come together to work on problems of mutual interest. This crossing of traditionally defined disciplinary boundaries is an activity that I would like to nurture during my time as President.
For AGU to remain strong, your interests and your needs must be addressed. The Union is only as strong as the membership. After all, you, the members, ARE AGU.
If you have questions or comments about AGU, please share them (AGUmatters@agu.org). Your opinions are important.
