Meeting on Land Use and Emissions in South/Southeast Asia officially opened

dsc01044The International Meeting on Land Use and Emissions in South/Southeast Asia officially opened on October, 17 2016 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

img_1247Focusing on land use management and contributions in Green House Gas emissions (GHGs) reduction from the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sectors, this 3-day international meeting will review the availability, potential and limitations of different data sources and methodologies for land use mapping, quantification and monitoring including impact on atmospheric environment. In their welcome remarks, Dr. Tran Phong, Chair, Southern Environmental Protection Agency, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and Prof. Mai Thanh Phong, the Vice Rector of Ho Chi Minh University of Technology underscored the importance of the meeting to the success of the Paris Climate Agreement, which has made AFOLU an integral part of the goal to keep the Earth’s temperature at or below 2C0.

The meeting will also serve as a platform for discussions on synergies among various tools and approaches on how to improve the role of Earth observations, ground data and modeling techniques for improved understanding of land use GHGs sources and sinks as well as interactions and collaboration among GODC-GOLD, SARI, and other sister programs.

img_3895The meeting will run through the 19th of October and is being attended by some 150 participants from all over the world, representing the academia, EOs initiatives and government and non-government agencies. It will be followed by a 3-day training on “Remote Sensing and Geospatial Technologies for Land Cover and Land Use Change Studies and Emissions Modeling”, which will take place at the Ho Chi Minh University, Vietnam during Oct 20-22 2016. About 90 early career scientists from the region will participate in the training.

Senay Habtezion is representing START in this meeting. START is a member of the International Steering Committee of the on going meeting and a partner to the SARI Initiative. The Southeast Asia Regional Research and Information Network (SEARRIN) GOFC-GOLD network is also actively contributing to the meeting, which is being hosted by Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology – a member of the Vietnam National University. Prof. Le Van Trung and Prof. Nguyen Phuoc Dan from the HCMC University had visited START and the University of Maryland as GOFC-GOLD Visiting Scientists earlier this year.
